Fettes College

Not the most fantastic photo, but I like the story behind it.
This morning (hot and sunny, so out with short, flip-flops and a T) I got up early and went for a cycle to explore the north of Edinburgh that I haven't really seen very much of. My wonderings took me down to Stockbridge, along a lovely walkway in a valley called Water of Leith, and then though Dean Village.

What I love about Edinburgh is that it still has the capacity to completely surprise me. I was just pottering along one of the many cobbled crescents littered with huge houses when this vista was in front of me - and the huge building at the end of it. I took this photo, and asked a passing man (dressed in a bow tie) what it was.

He informed me that it was Fettes Collage. His daughter used to teach music there, but left, by his words, "because they all thought they were Jesus".

Fettes Collage was a boys school, and is now co-educational private. It's surrounded by huge grounds. It was here that Tony Blair went to school - other notable alumni include James Bond and Michael Tippet.

I'll be returning here with more time on my hands to get some better photos and further my explorations.

After such a nice morning, I was stuck looking at rock though a microscope and getting confused due to the lack of instruction sheets.
