The death of an industry.
This is the semi-derilect remains of one of Hawick's famous mills. Once this industry provided 1000s of people with a good well paid job. Now the number if locals empolyed in the textile industry is tiny.
Allegedly local councillors and officials actively discouraged inwards investment to the Borders for decades, in case it hindered the flow of workers to the mills and forced up wages.
With the number of good jobs now equalling the square-root of heehaw, it's easy to feel a bit of sympathy for the good folk of the Borders.
