Northern Lighthouse Board
Was going along George Street at lunchtime and I passed this and could not resist blipping it. It is the offices of the Northern Lighthouse Board, (or the Commisioners of Northern Lighthouses)
I have not long read the The Lighthouse Stevensons by Bella Bathurst which is a fascinating book about three (or four) generations of the Stevenson family (of which Robert Louis Stevenson was one) which built all the lighthouses around Scotland. They are engineering masterpieces being built in the most inhospitable places and some were even underwater for much of the building time. Not only that but they worked for the NLB and travelled round all the lighthouses each year to so spot checks on the keepers and make sure all was okay.
What you cant see from this picture is that this lighthouse is also lit. Sadly their flags were not flying today.
