Solemn promises

This has been a wedding of two chapters.

Tonight we brought out the big guns, in the form of speeches, cocktails and dancing.

Apparently thirteen years ago, whilst living in Australia with my friend, I made an announcement (which I was reminded of in the taxi on the way to the party).

It went a little like this.

'When you one day get married I want to make a speech because I'm very good at public speaking, promise I can?'.

I vaguely recall some kind of friendship cementing promise/pact being made at the time.

Anyway, I duly kept my promise and delivered, albeit off the cuff.

I have no idea what I said to the one hundred guests, who had just been on the receiving end of a first class 'brother of the bride' speech, but I got a round of applause and made grown men weep.
