RRS Discovery
was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in Britain. Designed for Antarctic research, she was launched in 1901.
The spaceship Discovery One in Arthur C Clarke's 2001:A Space Odyssey, was named after the RRS Discovery as Clarke worked near wher it was berthed in London and used to visit it during his lunch breaks, He claims he was unaware that the vessel was buit in 1901 so the fact his book was set 100 years later was a complete coincedence.
She now sits at Discovery Point in Dundee, the place where she was built as part of a museum/attraction that is well worth a visit
