PHANTOM OF THE ESTUARY
I always think these birds look like they are wearing a mask - hence my title the "Phantom of the Estuary "
They straggled across to NZ from Australia around the 1880's and started breeding since about 1940.
They are one of the few birds that fly at night and they are like urban terrorists with a rawkus cry !!
There are not many in the North island (NZ) and Mrs Poo's uncle from up North was very excited to see them whilst visiting the South Island.
Anyway - one worm less for the Estuary !!
