The Historic Hadrian's Wall Coach Ride

Today the stagecoach came to Humshaugh. It was one of the stopping points on the 2 day drive along Hadrian's Wall. The coachmen were a mixture of experienced drivers and cowboys. A documentary is being made about their exploits.

Whilst in our village the horses were changed. The previous 4 had a feed and went into the horse box while 6 more were harnessed up. They needed the extra pulling power for Walwick Bank, just west of here. Out local first school brought a class of children to see the coach and horses. They were amazed.

It was dark all day and rained heavily during the afternoon. I had to push the ISO up to 1000 as time went by, so this image is rather grainy. Here they are travelling on the Military Road from Housesteads, and I am standing in the middle of the road to take the picture. The support cars behind were always in the image and their headlights were a nuisance. Never mind, it's a record of a happy day.
