Dance of the Mayflies
Another wonderful day learning and sharing on Douglas Lake.
After dinner I wandered by the lakeshore loitering with the fading light. It was the perfect temperature, the perfect light, the perfect evening. And so I gathered up friends nearby and we shoved off canoes to catch the last gasp of light setting behind Grapevine Point.
Matt and Bishnu casts lines out near the shore tempting fish while Jasmine and I let the small waves rock us, lost in conversations about love and life. And just then, like magic the mayflies began to dance! All around us their tiny wingbeats sought one another out through the darkness. Hatching and mating from the air it is the pinnacle of their short lives - this moment now! Frantically reproducing in mass only to die - their last life's act complete.
And so we rocked with the waves in the fading light and danced with the mayflies until the stars came out. Pure magic.
