Once upon a time
before many of us where even born, Hinckley held its first carnival..August 1912. It became an annual event up to 1933. After a short break there where two more carnivals in 1938 and `39 after which they ceased until 1961 and the town has enjoyed including today, fifty consecutive carnival events.
My husband remembers them from an early age and told me today of all the industries who entered floats and marching bands. It culminated in a huge fair in the town centre. Sadly a lot of these industries have ceased to exist and it`s testament to the organisers of this years carnival committee that 45 organisations entered.
This included schools, pubs, businesses, marching bands and community groups. There where stalls up and down the main street and the car park and council grounds where packed. Brilliant day was had by all, weather was great, hopefully loads of money raised for local charities and long may it continue.
The only bum note for us was when we gotback to the car we found we had a flat tyre. We had picked up a nail somewhere. So it was on with the emergency spare and round to the garage where it cost us (Chris) £135 for TWO tyres ( the offside on was bordering on illegal)....
Have backblipped and will start catching up with you all....
