Order of the Bath
I overdid it a bit yesterday evening & felt distinctly jaded this morning as a result. So a quite night in. Supper, telly & a soak in the tub.
I've recently read, in Bill Bryson's highly entertaining "At Home, a Short History of Private Life", something of the history of the bathroom.
Domestic bathrooms were slow to catch on in Britain for a variety of reasons, not least that they were expensive to buy & install, & homes here were often too small to accommodate them. Indeed, when our house was built, in 1911, it had three bedrooms, but no bathroom. It now has two bedrooms...
The journalist Katherine Whitehorn remembers that as recently as the late 1950s, she & her colleagues on "Woman's Own" magazine were not allowed to do bathroom features, as so few of their readers had them, & such articles would only promote feelings of envy!
