Sushi Monster

I love sushi.

But it's not cheap and the supermarket stuff just doesn't taste as good.

So today we're making it at home.

After a holiday in Tokyo a couple of years ago, I decided to buy aproper rice cooker - it's the most expensive kitchen gadget I've ever splurged out on (although if I ever get round to purchasing the Kitchen Aid mixer that I've longed for that will eclipse it and then some!!)

It cooks the rice to perfection, and keeps warm until you need it - and you know it's Japanese because plays a cute little melody at the start (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) and end (Something random!) of cooking. Plus it has a very handy cake function (although a light airy sponge doesn't seem to it's speciality.)

There's something quite therapeutic about the neat slicing of ingredients, dressing the sushi rice, carefully constructing and rolling the tubes, slicing the pieces into equal sizes, and artistically presenting it on a plate. Or maybe that's just the OCD kicking in!

Having now mastered the chopstick technique, it's even more satisfying when a mouthwatering piece of home made delight passes from plate to soy sauce to mouth, without ever hitting the table, or worse, carpet.
