A ridiculous man's dream

Moscow public nonconformist art?

Khruschev hated abstract art. Although he oversaw a general 'thaw' after Stalin's death, he avowed his disdain for abstract art at an exhibition in 1962. This sent nonconformist art underground, including Valentina Kropivnitskaya, who with her husband moved to Paris in the 70s. She was famous for her placid landscapes (not all nonconformist art was anti-regime) with peaceful, motionless, humanoid animals in the foreground: like this.

So I was surprised to see an almost identical sculpture in central Moscow, not far from the Christ the Saviour cathedral. A tribute?
