Historic pharmacy-

I went into Strathallan pharmacy this afternoon in Bridge-of-Allan and was reminded that not only is this the oldest retail business in town, having been established in 1851 , but it also has a certain literary notoriety.
Its founder, Gilbert Farie, a larger than life character, is supposed to have been the inspsiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Edward Hyde in Jekyll and Hyde.
The young Stevenson was a regular visitor to this Victorian spa town and his conversations with the pharmacist are recalled in later writings.
The pharmacy still has the original wooden drawers which are used today though their contents reflect modern medicine.
Gilbert Farie used to advertise that he had the "finest Swedish leeches" fresh every week.
