NZ Fur Seal pup

Another brilliant sunny day with a nippy breeze necessitating a jacket but perfect for blowing the cobwebs away. Walked the canine around the Oval sports field and then spent some minutes photographing myriad daffodils cloaking the banks before picking Mother up from her exercise class and going to St.Clair for a coffee at the St.Clair Cafe. The new owners were in situ and seem very nice.

Whilst enjoying our caffeine hit we noticed a few people peering over the rails into the sea. When curiosity got the better of me I discovered this wee chap preening and basking on the rocks. Suspect the pup was only a few weeks old and we wondered where Mum may have been. This is the first time I have seen such a young pup so close to human habitat. Unfortunately the bright sun did no favours when trying to get a good image but think this is not too shabby. The pup definitely knew we were watching and teased us by lolling just behind a large boulder and offering only flashes of itself.

Next week Mother and I are going to spend half an hour in the company of Sirocco the Kakapo who thinks he is human. That will be fabulous. Just hope I can get a reasonable image of him as they are nocturnal and thus lighting will be problematic....any hints?
