A superheated plume of air heads skywards in the chill early morning air from the Mossmorran gas fractionation plant in Fife, ten miles across the Forth from Leith.

When I saw this en route to work, familiar and haunting images of 1950s American atomic bomb tests in Nevada came to mind - as well as reading a few years back that the Churchill Government briefly considered using the Cairngorms for early British bomb tests before choosing sites in Australia.
