Victorian times
Today back home in sunny 'Bedders' we had a leaflet posted through our door which gave information about some old and interesting buildings and statues etc. which can be found ion the town. I was very surprised to read that we have a church, St Cuthberts which dates back to AD900 and where monks from Durham brought St Cuthberts body on 12th December 1069 fearful of the advance of William the Conquerer, a pub infamous for the evicted landlord Jocker Amos, murdering two policemen and the incumbent landlords wife in the 1920's and one of the last known Victorian Postboxes still in use. Apparently, the first ever penny black stamp and official stationary 'the Mulready wrapper' were posted here on the 2nd May 1840,to an AW Blenkinsop, who had unfortunately died 9 years earlier. Penny Blacks and the Mulready wrappers came into service on the 6th May but had been issued on the 1st! The letter was forwarded with a 4th May postmark to his family in Carlisle. Being a bit of a schoolboy philatilist and because my birthday is 4th May, I thought I would track down said Postbox and blip it! .
