Apples-in-a-tub

My friend has a small back yard; sometime back her husband planted an apple tree in a tub, I think it was more than a year ago so he would have seen the apples grow last year.
Sadly not this year; they are not quite ready for eating yet except for two; they are 'eating' not baking.
It always surprises me just what can be grown in a tub, or indeed in a small space.
