Glasgow Church Spire

I was working at The Beatson today. On my way along Great Western Road, I spotted this church spire opposite the Botanical Gardens. It seems to have a metal circle around the middle of the spire. Anyone know what it is??

I went to see The Inbetweeners with Sailfish tonight. What a hoot!!!!!!
