Let's see if this works eh? @dyslexiaaction
As I mentioned the other day I went along to the Dyslexia Action office in Glasgow for some one-to-one advice. I came away with a whole list of advice but the one that will have the biggest impact I think is possibly the simplest.
A pad of paper, a pen and a box in every room in the house. When I remember something I write it on the nearest pad and put it in the box. If I put something down that's important it goes in the nearest box. This way I only need to check the boxes if I've lost something or if I've forgotten something. Just need to get into a routine of doing it all the time and have set times during the day for checking the boxes.
Eventually I'll be able to cut down the number of boxes but if this works I can see it being a major help. I've tried similar things in the past but they have usually revolved around carrying a notepad and diary around with me everywhere which works to a point. When you forget to lift the bag it's in or lose a pen though your world breaks down completely.
I've often tried to explain to people that talk over me or but in just exactly what it does to my train of thought but I could never quite explain it well enough. I was told this though at the one-to-one and it struck a bell with me.
Imagine your on the Internet and the website your on is all flashy but loads really slow. You click a link and watch the 'timer' swirl away. You get frustrated and click it again and restart the whole loading process. The same thing happens over and over until you give in and just let it load in it's own time but you kick yourself when you realise that if you'd let it load by itself in the first place it would have been finished before you clicked the link for the third time.
That's how your brain works. Your high IQ and your seriously low processing speed need to learn to work together or your brain is just going to keep clicking that link. It's the same when someone interrupts you. You have to go right back to the start and go through it all again.
There is a reason I don't get involved with serious conversations at parties. By the time I've thought through my input they've already moved on to something else. If you ever see me standing quietly in the corner don't worry. I'm just listening to it all and enjoying myself. :)
