In winter this river, known as the Allan Water, floods and it's popular with local canoeists.

It is also the inspiration for the old Scottish song: "The banks of Allan Water."

Robert Louis Stevenson used to spend holidays in this Victorian spa town and the river was a source of inspiration for both Treasure Island and Kidnapped.
