Lake Taupo
On our road trip we stopped at Lake Taupo (who wouldn't?). Its the largest lake by surface area in New Zealand and a beautiful township. It is very important volcanically and world renowned for trout fishing. See Wikipedia for more info.
The volcanoes Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu are the three mountains near the lake.
