National Trust houses can often be relied upon to throw up something a bit quirky.
This is the dairy at Ham House, built in the 1670s, although the cast iron cows legs & hand painted Wedgewood tiles were added in the 19th century.
The 1668 household accounts book shows the dairy maid was paid £3 10s per annum, plus bed & board. She would have been among the lowest paid servants in the household.
By contrast, the cook was paid a whopping £20 a year. Ker-ching!
