What's in a name?

'Sungold' is one of my favourite tomatoes - small, very tasty ... and red. So imagine my delight a few months ago when I discovered that F, one of the keen gardeners in the village was selling some little plants of it. So I bought three plants from him and because I hadn't seen him for some time and we had a nice chat, he even threw in a plant of another variety that I could try. Sure, the label said Gold Sun but I just thought that was F getting it a bit wrong.

I took the plants home, planted them in pots and I have been looking after them lovingly ever since. They grew really well and the tomatoes grew to 'Sungold' size but then got bigger... and bigger. Then they started turning yellow! I started doing a bit of research on the net and discovered that these must be 'Golden Sun', not 'Sungold' and they were all going to be big and yellow.

I've never been a fan of yellow tomatoes - think of all those lovely, little, red 'Sungold' tomatoes I was missing! But sometimes we have to make the best of what we've got. So I'm determined not to waste all my Golden Suns - after all, I've never had a crop like it. I've got hundreds... So I'll gather what there is and get out the recipe books. Watch this space...
