Fancy Pants

One of the main features of Grasmere Sports is the Cumbrian wrestling. It's serious stuff as you can see from the spectators.

Before washing machines the men's heavy clothes were difficult to get clean and so stripping down to long johns and vest became the norm. The velvet pant were for modesty, but the womenfolk took to embellishment with embroidery. There's still a prize for the best dressed wrestler in the competition.
