Cwmcarn Forest Drive
Our tents were surrounded by the most beautiful, near-sheer hills, covered in fir trees. So today we stayed closer to our base, and took a leisurely drive into the hills amongst the trees. The views were spectacular, and it was well worth the £5 entry fee, as it was quiet enough to chill out, but there were still some people around to not feel isolated. We decided to make use of the fixed barbeques for our lunch, while the kids enjoyed the fantastic play area on car park 3. Everything on the drive was very well organised and layed out. There are 7 car parks in total, each one with something different to see, from amazing views into the town nestled in the valley far below, to wood carved scultpured enspired by ancient welsh myths and legends and American Indians.
Later, we walked up the steepest hill I have ever climbed, to reach Twmbarlwm, the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. The views reached right from the Severn Bridge to the Brecon Beacons. Well worth the effort. We then spoiled ourselves with a big portion of Fish and Chips for dinner before going home! The truth is, after all that walking I didn't have the energy to cook on our little campingaz cooker!
