Rural decline
I pass these dilapidated greenhouses every day going to and from the station. You can't tell from this angle but they must all be about 100 yards long so they must have been growing on a significant scale. What they grew, I don't know as I have only ever seen them in this state of disrepair.
The sad thing is that it suggests that there was once a business here that was thriving because it must have cost an absolute fortune to build these in the first place and if you note the chimneys, they must have required a substantial amount of fuel to heat the greenhouses.
No doubt the major supermarkets are importing from abroad throughout the year rather than out of season fruit and veg being brought on here; or it might be as simple as that they were squeezed out of business by being unable to sell to those major supermarkets at a low enough price to win the contracts.
Someone always has to bear the cost of those very reasonable prices at the supermarket. I too like the prices but just bear it in mind: something has to give.
