The "Devil's Leap" bridge, Ceret
Best bridge of the holiday - this is the Devil's Bridge or Devil's Leap bridge, the oldest of three bridges over the River Tech at Ceret. This one was built between 1321 and 1341, and on completion was the longest single span bridge in the world (at 45m). It is called the Devil's Bridge because the legend of its construction was that the devil built it for the townspeople on condition that he had the first soul to cross it. The residents sent a cat over when the bridge was finished, but people were reluctant to use it for years afterwards. This is a common legend about old bridges in France. You can get such good shots of it now because of the modern road bridge that runs just upstream of it today. The old bridge is still open to pedestrians and cyclists, and affords great views of the Tech valley.
