The Breadknife

Left Alex (daughter) today and took our time meandering back home. Spent most of the day in the Warrumbungles, a National Park which contains the remnants of a large, heavily eroded shield volcano that was active from 18 to 15 million years ago. The remaining complex, rocky formations are what is left after millions of years of erosion.

The main features of the Warrumbungle mountains are a series of huge, jagged outcrops, surrounded by hilly bush and woodland forest. On the left is the Breadknife, a straight wall of jagged rock nearly 100 metres high, and is particularly rare.

Mr C and I went to Spirey Lookout for lunch - here's the view. It was a mere 6km walk, but very pleasant. Two days ago, whilst waiting for us to arrive, Alex took herself off alone to walk for 6 hours (approx 18kms) around the Grand High Tops where the remnants of the volcanic rock are especially clustered. Lots of steps! This view was spectacular enough for me.
