You can't come here and not do this

Our first trip to Kimberley in almost 30 years. It's not changed much - it perches on the edge of the desert and has had little economic activity to speak of since full-on diamond mining stopped many decades ago.

Actually, it's a dump. The litter in the streets is ankle deep and there is razor wire everywhere, speaking volumes about seemingly unchecked crime, municipal incompetence and neglect as much as unemployment. The sole highlight is the famed hole and it's newly renovated museum.

It's a must-do.

200 and then some metres deep and the artifact of 22.5 million tons of soil, rock and diamonds being taken out BY HAND! There were almost no machines around at the end of the 19th century to do this mechanically.
