The Long Tour
Another backblip today after a very long day of touring yesterday. We were out for twelve hours and by the time I got back to our room I didn't have it in me to write a word. I am not entirely sure about the unusual choices of attractions our tour guide made. They included a public pool (for viewing but not swimming in), a tomato farm which consisted of two greenhouse and some tumbling down out buildings and a very long drive to a fishing village whose harbour is no longer used. I had visions of sun roasted fisherman in Icelandic jumpers smoking pipes. My finger was practically twitching on the shutter thinking about it but no, deserted without a soul to be seen. Hmm, very strange. Luckily he did take us to the Geysirs and the Golden Waterfall, Gullfoss which blew my tiny little mind. Just as we were leaving a beautiful rainbow appeared. I think the mist in my eyes might have made me weep just a tiny little bit.
I will miss this remarkable country with it's astonishing landscapes, pure, delicious water and the wonderfully warm and welcoming ,stunningly beautiful people. I have had the great pleasure of talking to so many locals and have not had one single person decline my request for a portrait. I am so grateful to my little sister for planting the Icelandic seed in our heads. She visited this beautiful island last summer with our niece and loved it so much. If I hadn't seen the film she made of her trip I never would have considered joining my husband on his work trip. It would have meant another week spent apart. As it goes it was a trip of a lifetime.
This lovely face is of our waitress from lunch yesterday. We stopped at strange restaurant just before the trip to the geysirs and it was staffed with the most adorable bunch of people. Our very camp Austrian host modelled for me for ages. He had me giggling with his colourful cravat and mad almost comic accent, especially after I asked him to give me his naughtiest smile. At one point he took me into the empty second dining room to photograph the very hungover bartender with bright green eyes. The next thing I knew he was waltzing me around the tables. I can't even imagine what our group would have made off it had they caught a glimpse.
Back to London today to make it in time for my husband's cousins wedding tomorrow. I am going to need a holiday after this holiday. Looking forward to catching up with you all next week. I feel so out of the loop!
I will put together a gallery of faces next week. I have photographed so many people this week. Including some nuns!
