just follow your eyes

today we were up in the forest again. Mr. Spitzi and the Blingspitzis have been working very hard through the summer holidays and have cleared massive bits of it. I have to admit that I don't do all that much up there apart from lug big bits of wood around to pile up and point to trees that need a bit of chainsaw attention. (In return, they don't help out much in the vegetable garden - it's a deal that we live with....) The felling of the trees happens, of course, in the winter. However, we are not blessed with a lot of time for forestry work so, once the trees are on the ground, it takes us until the summer to get branches off, trunks cut to a moveable length and then pile them up to season. After two or three years drying, they'll get cut into logs for our wood-fired central heating system. This is the point where I tend to make up for what I didn't do in the forest as I tend to lug nearly all the logs into the house. You can see one pile we've made this holiday down at the end of the forest. It used to be impossible to see through this bit as it was so full of dead wood, scrub wood, fallen trees and branches and then hundreds of growing trees all over the place. So, you can see that they've achieved a lot!
