Schoolboy Graffiti - 1877 style

Hidden at the back of Edinburgh Napier University is an old wall. I notice that one course is covered in names inscribed into it, some done very elegantly and precisely. One is dated 1877 when the land was part of Merchiston castle School.
I can only surmise that they were done by the pupils there, unless anyone knows different?
