Man in Thought
Went through to Sandton today for T's dentist appointment. Had a quick lunch with my Mom at her home.
On the way home we took the time to walk through a street market. This market just sprung up on a corner one day and grew into a large, informal market. It is situated along a very busy intersection and during peak hours is a lovely distraction to the slow moving traffic. The market has been in existence for more than 10 years now and contains mostly sculptures; some as small as a few centimetres to very large ones as tall as 3 metres. The crafters are not local but come from neighbouring African countries. Most of them actually sleep there (in the open) with their wares and are busy creating their sculptures each day.
There are some real works of art on show and they have taken many hours to create the finished products. I have chosen this man as my blip as he just has so much character. The other items on display are: variations of the big five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard) as well as smaller creatures like tortoises, birds and even a praying mantis. There are beautiful sculptures of women and children too. The crafters use different mediums such as steel, wood and stone. They are proud of their work but will still bargain for a sale.
Wish I could show more than one photo today as there was so much to see.
