Can You Guess???

This was our day. Doesn't look like much does it? We spent the entire day at the pediatrician allergist that's located 1 hour and 15 minutes away from home. The visit started with a series of tests that involve pricking our son repeatedly with potential allergens. From that we learned he's still, at least somewhat, allergic to eggs. We also found out he's allergic to dust mites, some mold, and oh yeah - roach poop. Not sure how the last one even ended up in the test, but apparently it's quite common.

We took a break mid-day for lunch where we asked the waitress at the Japanese restaurant to make us one scrambled egg to go (pictured above). We then went back and spent the next 3 hours doing a series of egg challenges to see just how severe the egg allergy is. Basically, they give him a tiny bit of egg to eat, waited to see if he broke out in hives or could breathe. If nothing happened they "up-ed the dosage" and tried again. After 4 rounds he was up to a few bites when a single hive appeared on his lips. The bane of our day!

Now the most important thing you have to know about allergists is that they don't really know anything for sure. But we gathered from his non-committal diagnosis is that we can worry a little less about him keeling over from mayonnaise. The doc thinks he can handle egg cooked in baked goods or in recipes but he's not quite ready for eggs over easy.

What did our five year old get out of the information? He spent about half the ride home thinking of dishes he'd like to try. Chocolate chip cookies are on the menu for tomorrow...
