Coastal Erosion

The weather today was on the rubbish side of changeable and so we dedicated the day to kids' activities by visiting an attraction on the Isle of Wight known as Blackgang Chine. A chine is a steep-sided valley cut out of the sandstone by the river (as are most valleys) and this one was connected to smugglers who used it as a route to the sea. There is actually no chine there as the erosion by the sea has meant that the original chine would have been up to three quarters of a mile into the water.

You can see the eroding coastline in the above photo with the more dramatic chalk cliffs in the distance. These lead to The Needles, which are a series of rocks that mark the most westerly point of the Isle of Wight. I decided to blip this photo as the rather threatening sky and the bright sunshine were pretty much the feature of the day.

Thanks for the comments on my photos while I have been away. I will resume the commenting when I get back but have been sparing with my online time to avoid being anti-social but also because this is a charged facility.
