Brown butterfly
I've been through my butterfly book and still can't work out what this is - probably very common (as I saw several) - I wonder if the damage to its wing has hidden some characteristics useful for identification. The closest I've got is a grayling or ringlet of some kind. When open, the wings were very plain brown with just a hint of a small brown 'eye' on the top of the upper wing.
Butterflies were disappointing this year - no scarce swallowtails at all.
