A bit like Goldilocks.

I'm trying to find the right fit.

The first book is fantastic and I can't wait to pick it up again...but it's the third in a series of books about Theodore Roosevelt and I had to put it down while the debt ceiling debate was monopolizing the news. Why? Because after a nine month stretch of reading nothing but books on Roosevelt (preceded by a full year of reading nothing but books about U.S. presidents - shout out to Lincoln and Adams!) my brain can't hold any more political information. It really can't. It actually completely shuts down every time I pick that book up. It's sort of like passing out drunk, but without all the fun.

So I thought I'd do a complete 180 degree turn and pick up an old favorite - Lonesome Dove. I read it every summer and every summer I fall in love with Gus, Call, and Deets all over again. Unfortunately, it's 112 degrees F here and based on Larry McMurtry's description of the weather in the book, it's about 115 degrees F there. I don't need to read about cracks in the earth big enough for a chicken to fall in...I'm living it.

Now I'm reading a different old favorite. Naked. It's just the right mix of humor and social commentary and the essays are short enough to read through without taxing my brain too much. It also has the added bonus of never really discussing the weather (except the inferred reference to winter in the piece called "Dinah the Christmas Whore") so I don't feel as if I'm suffocating from heat.

Yep, this one is just right. For right now...
