Ingilby Emblem

Ripley Castle has been (and still is) the home of the Ingilby family for over 700 years and it is well worth a visit. The tour guides are very knowledgeable about the history of the castle and the family.

The boars head became part of the Ingilby coat of arms after Thomas Ingilby was knighted for saving the life of King Edward III, by preventing him from being gored to death by a wild boar.

Personally, I took a liking to Trooper Jane Ingilby who held Oliver Cromwell prisoner overnight in the Castle's library and now has a Daleside beer named after her ~ Crack Shot, a classic 17th century ale, which I tried (well, it would have been rude not to) and can confirm that it is very nice indeed.

The gardens are a lovely spot for a picnic.
