Red bug on a wild cereal stalk
I was pleased to meet Ashley at his Farm Shop in Bisley, when I went to stock up on their vegetables and free range eggs. He was taking a break from repairing his baler which had died on him halfway through the crop yesterday afternoon. Another farmer friend lent him a baler so he managed to get the crop finished.
Ashley is a delightful man and we often have chats. I went to a talk he once gave to the Bisley Women's Institute about all the archaeological finds he has made on the farm. These include the usual neolithic flints etc, but also roman coins, which is not surprising as there was a big roman presence in our area.
I asked him to remind me where the Giants Stone was, as we had formerly discussed it, and he had mentioned it was on their land. Apparently it was an ancient standing stone, always marked on old Ordnance Survey maps. He said it actually was now lying prostrate, and in two pieces, having suffered an accident at some point in the relatively recent history, probably by the action of a machine.
I drove to where he described it was, but once there I couldn't find it. I will return whether better directions or ideally with Ashley to guide me. It is in one of my favourite, very remote Cotswold valleys, between Bisley the ancient centre of Bisley Hundred and WaterLane, a tiny hamlet near the source of a tributary of the river Frome.
I took some pictures across the valley towards the beautiful old manor house half a mile away on the other side of the valley. Beside the very old banked field boundary, whose traditional wall was now completely tumbled down, I saw some wild or escaped cereal plants, with a small group of still flowering poppies. there weren't any cereal crops in the local field, just grasses or meadows.
This little bug caught my eye and I tried to catch its qualities, but it wasn't hanging around for me. I have no idea what it was, but it wasn't flying and instead climbed straight up then down the stalk of this unknown plant. I will definitely come back to explore this valley with more time. I had already made myself late for my meeting in town at 2pm.
PS
Just checked google for the Giants Stone and came across this picture, in case you are interested. Various sources do say it is quite difficult to find, but I will get there eventually.
