Fairy Steps

Today's the day ........................ to walk on limestone

Had a lovely walk today - on to Beetham Fell, a limestone ridge about 10 miles south of Kendal. Limestone is my most favourite rock to walk on. I love the wonderful shapes that it makes and the plants that like to grow on it.

My path took me to Fairy Steps - a steep staircase roughly hewn out of the rock. This path used to be known locally as 'the Coffin Route' as Arnside Parish (below the steps) had to carry their deceased to consecrated ground in the village of Beetham.

Folk-lore has it that if you can climb the steps without touching the sides, then you will see a fairy .......................
