Leaving Leknes in the Lofoten islands
Some dramatic scenery in the Lofoten islands - unfortunately as we cruised by the most dramatic parts of the Lofotens the weather turned nasty. But we were lucky in Leknes - a fairly nondescript administrative centre for the region. We got a local bus to the small fishing village Ballstad and while we stopped for coffee a very kind woman told us where we could find a path to a monument dedicated to fishermen and sailors lost at sea. From there we got a great view and as we boarded the bus back to Leknes and a bunch of other tourists got off the skies opened. Then I took a taxi ride around some of the more scenic roads in the area - 700kr for one hour (US$130, ?90, £80), not bad considering I ended up paying 980kr for a taxi home from Oslo airport at the end of the trip. The time on land is always too brief on a cruise, but having your hotel room (and bars and restaurants) traveling with you makes up for it.
