Girl Meets Rambutan

Nephelium lappaceum

Out for a short grocery run yesterday for some chicken, bread, and bananas, I saw a small basketful of Rambutan fruit sitting largely neglected to one side of the produce counter.

I could not believe the price tag ($3.99 per lb.) but could also not pass up the chance to introduce our youngest (American-born) daughter to this fruit, which (along with lansones, atis, lychees, langka, and a host of other delectable things, could be had for a song (and which we took for granted) back when we were still living in the Philippines.

I bought three rambutan, and while daughter G. found the hairy exterior of the fruit interesting, she was not nonplussed by it in the least.

And I am happy to report it was love at first bite.
