Unknown bird on the village pond

I saw this bird (I thought it was a young coot at first) on the village pond tonight. I decided to take a look as I haven't looked at the pond for years as its in an out of the way place. The koi are so large now their fins and tails regularly break the surface as they swim about. The plastic heron is still there to guard them!
