Life and Death in the City

I had taken Hamish and Hannah down to the dog beach between showers. We were on our way home and I was just near the Crowne Plaza when I noticed this Kestrel on the side of the road. Pigeon pie for lunch. A fellow blipper (probably a real photographer) was there and he said he thought pigey poo was alive when he first arrived. It was stoney cold when I stopped. There were cars and people going by but this Kestrel wasn't putting his lunch off for anyone. We snapped away for a few minutes. One of the passers by (with young child) said it had made his day seeing this. I think even though it is gory, it made my day too!

I would be interested if any of the birders out there can tell me whether a Kestrel would take on a pigeon. I thought their usual food was grasshoppers and so on.
