Falkirk Wheel.
A fellow blipper recently offered a shot of a boat lift in England and mentioned the Falkirk Wheel as the only other boat lift in the UK . As we live almost within sight of the F/k Wheel, here is an overall study. The final section of this structure is the "business end" and the whole pivots aroung that horizintal cylinder in the middle. It all works on the principle that a body displaces it's own volume (Archimedes; Eureka!) of water so the two carrier sections always weigh exactly the same.
So much for the educational bit. It was a good place to take Euan for a walk - nice smooth paths for the pram. The top end vanishes into a tunnel and comes out on the far side at the union Canal which you can now follow right into the heart of Edinburgh. The adventurous can walk up and through this tunnel and even walk out on the elevated spans for great views.
