Safe in Your Alms?
Inspired by bittersweet's blip from last Sunday, here are the Farnell Almshouses in Isleworth.
The expansion of Isleworth in the 1840s led the Duke of Northumberland, of nearby Syon House, contributing £2000 towards the construction of the new St. John's Church in 1858. John Farnell, owner of the Isleworth Brewery, paid for the vicarage, school & almshouses.
Today they are leased to the Notting Hill Housing Trust, & provide temporary accomodation for people with mental health needs, some of whom have become well known local characters. Sadly, when some residents have had to move on, they have struggled to adjust to life in a wider community.
(Late blipping today. I'll catch up with you tomorrow!)
