Cover your cabbages -
there's a Small White butterfly about.
Doesn't sound very threatening does it? Well the butterfly won't harm them, except it will lay it's eggs on any of the brassica family, which includes the humble cabbage. When the caterpillars eventually appear, they can devour a whole bed of cabbages in a day or two, leaving nothing of the leaves bar a few thick stemmy bits sticking up.
This particular butterfly is most likely the dreaded female, as the males often have the dark spots missing. It's also not the first brood of the year either, as the wing tip marking is quite dark, compared to the very light grey of first brood butterlies.
Today has, interestingly, been the best day around here for butterflies of any kind the whole Spring/Summer.
Thanks to everyone who expressed their congratulations on yesterday's graduation blip.
