Out for a walk in the park today. I noticed many husks of the cicadas and was lucky to find a cicada that had just broken out of its husk. There are many different kinds of cicada in Japan. The early summer ones are smaller and sing gently. These big ones appear later in end-July and are much, much larger. They are about the size of a ping-pong ball, if the ping-pong ball was not so round, that is. These big ones sing really loud and I love to hear their songs as this really reminds me of Japanese summer. Another kind if cicada appears in late summer, sometime around September. They are smaller and have a very interesting song that is hard to describe. Here is a link to a youtube videoNihon no Semi that has the late summer cicada songs. I hope you enjoy!
