Sheela na gig
By popular request! Okay, four people requested it.. here is our Sheela Na Gig.
My husband obtained her from the internet and she hangs in our hall.
These little grotesques are most often found on churches though sometimes
castles too. There is great argument about what they are supposed to represent,
various theories being that they (like gargoyles) are to ward off evil, are a
cautionary tale against lust or are a vestige of a pagan religion.
According to a website called sheelanagig.org, none of the explanations are
very satisfactory so the jury is still out.
Perhaps they were just put there to confuse later generations of people? Most of
them seem to have a rather enigmatic smile on their face after all. If so it seems
to have worked!
Luckily so many of them have survived both Cromwell and the Victorians though
sadly from the website it seems that some are still being vandalised to this day.
