Common Centaury
Walking the spaniel early this morning I came across the largest puffball I have ever seen. It was significantly bigger than the spaniel's head - which may be why he was very wary of it. Tried to get him to sit or lie beside it to show the scale but he wasn't interested. I thought a photo of a large white blob probably wouldn't look as impressive as it seemed in reality so I've used this one of the common centaury instead. Its a common flower on dry grassland around the Downs, with striking pink petals and bright yellow anthers. The flowers usually close in the afternoon. This one doesn't seem sure of the time, some are open and some are closed.
